Willem II is a professional football club based in Tilburg, North Brabant, Netherlands. The organisation was founded on 12 August 1896 under the name Tilburgia and was renamed Willem II in 1898 in honour of King Willem II of the Netherlands, who had strong historical ties with Tilburg. Over more than a century, Willem II has developed into one of the established names in Dutch professional football and is widely known by its nickname, “Tricolores,” reflecting the club’s distinctive red, white and blue colours. The club has a significant record in Dutch football, including three national championships, achieved in 1916, 1952 and 1955, as well as two KNVB Cup victories in 1944 and 1963. Willem II has also competed in European football during its history. The professional first team plays its home matches at the Koning Willem II Stadion in Tilburg, which serves as the central venue for the club’s sporting, commercial and supporter activities. Alongside the senior professional team, Willem II maintains a structured youth development programme designed to identify, train and develop talented young footballers. The youth academy operates from Sportpark Prinsenhoeve in Tilburg and forms an important component of the organisation’s long-term sporting strategy. Willem II also maintains a strong relationship with the city of Tilburg, supporters, sponsors and businesses throughout the wider Midden-Brabant region. Its commercial activities include sponsorship, networking, corporate events, business meetings and matchday hospitality, making the club an important regional business platform as well as a sporting institution. In 2026, Willem II celebrated its 130th anniversary, highlighting its long-standing connection with Tilburg and Dutch football. The organisation combines professional football, youth development, supporter engagement, community involvement, commercial partnerships and entertainment while preserving the history and identity that have characterised Willem II since the late nineteenth century.
