União Desportiva de Santarém, commonly known as UD Santarém or UDS, is a Portuguese football club based in Santarém, in the Santarém District of Portugal. The club was founded on 23 August 1969 following the merger of two historic local organisations, Sport Grupo Scalabitano “Os Leões” and Sport Grupo União Operária. Since its formation, the club has played an important role in the sporting life of Santarém and the wider Ribatejo region. UD Santarém has a broad sporting heritage that extends beyond football. Throughout its history, the organisation has participated in and achieved success across several sports, including basketball, handball, cycling, gymnastics, athletics and fishing. Football, however, has remained central to the club's identity. The club has competed in Portugal's national football competitions for significant periods and won the former Portuguese III Division on two occasions, in the 1974–75 and 1984–85 seasons. In more recent years, UD Santarém has strengthened its football structure and returned to national competitions from the 2019–20 season. The club achieved promotion to Liga 3 in the 2020–21 season and became one of the teams participating in the inaugural edition of the competition. Youth development is another major component of the organisation. UD Santarém maintains teams across a wide range of age groups and has a substantial player-development programme. Its formation structure includes boys' and girls' football, with the club holding certified status as a football training organisation. The club also has a veterans' team, demonstrating its commitment to football participation across different generations. UD Santarém places considerable emphasis on community engagement and the connection between sport and education. Players and coaching staff regularly participate in activities with local schools and community organisations, promoting football, healthy lifestyles, education and social participation. The club's identity is strongly connected to Santarém and the Ribatejo region, while its continued participation in national competitions reflects its sporting ambitions. Through professional and youth football, community programmes, player development and its long sporting history, União Desportiva de Santarém remains an important football and sporting institution in the region.
