About Us

Telstar, formally known as Sportclub Telstar, is a professional football club based in Velsen-Zuid in the province of North Holland, Netherlands. The club was established in 1963 following the merger of the professional football activities of VSV and Stormvogels, two clubs from the IJmuiden area. Telstar became the professional football representative of the region and developed a distinctive identity closely connected with IJmuiden, Velsen and the surrounding coastal community. The club is widely known by its nickname “De Witte Leeuwen,” meaning “The White Lions,” reflecting its traditional white playing colours. Telstar plays its home matches at the BUKO Stadion in Velsen-Zuid, which serves as the club’s main sporting, commercial and community venue. The organisation currently competes in the Eredivisie, the highest level of Dutch professional football. Telstar returned to the Dutch top division after securing promotion through the 2024–25 promotion play-offs, ending a long absence from the Eredivisie. Alongside its men's first team, Telstar maintains youth and women's football structures through partnerships with regional football organisations. The men's youth programme is operated in cooperation with IJ.V.V. Stormvogels in IJmuiden, while the women's youth structure is connected with RKVV DSS in Haarlem. Telstar also has a significant social and community role through Telstar Maatschappelijk, which develops programmes involving young people, schools and local communities. The club's Groene Leeuwen initiative focuses on sustainability and environmental responsibility. In addition to football, the BUKO Stadion functions as a venue for meetings, business events and other activities, providing Telstar with a broader commercial role within the region. The club describes its core values as determined, united, sympathetic and distinctive, while its mission is expressed through the phrase “Betrokken en Onverschrokken,” meaning involved and fearless. Telstar therefore combines professional football, youth development, women's football, community programmes, sustainability initiatives, commercial activities and supporter engagement. Its identity remains strongly rooted in the people and culture of IJmuiden and the wider Velsen area.
