    About Us

Special Olympics Ontario (SOO) is a non-profit sports organisation headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Established in 1979, it is the provincial organisation responsible for delivering Special Olympics programmes throughout Ontario. Its primary mission is to enrich the lives of Ontarians with intellectual disabilities through sport by providing opportunities for athletic development, competition, physical fitness, social participation and personal achievement. Special Olympics Ontario operates within the wider Special Olympics movement and is affiliated with Special Olympics Canada, which represents the country within the international Special Olympics organisation. The organisation provides year-round sports training and athletic competitions for children, youth and adults with intellectual disabilities. Its programmes cover a wide range of Olympic-type sports, including athletics, basketball, bowling, swimming, soccer, floor hockey, golf, bocce, curling, figure skating, gymnastics, powerlifting, softball and winter sports. Participants can access recreational and competitive opportunities through community-based clubs and local programmes across Ontario. SOO also provides introductory programmes for younger participants, including Active Start and FUNdamentals, which encourage early physical development and participation in sport. Beyond athletic competition, the organisation supports athlete leadership, health education, volunteer development, coaching and inclusive community engagement. It works with athletes, families, coaches, volunteers, schools, local sports clubs, sponsors and community organisations to create accessible sporting opportunities. Special Olympics Ontario also organises provincial competitions and selects athletes to represent Ontario at national Special Olympics Canada events. Its programmes are designed to develop sporting skills, confidence, independence, friendships and a sense of belonging. The organisation relies on a network of trained coaches and volunteers who support athletes throughout their sporting journeys. Its activities promote respect, acceptance, inclusion and human dignity while encouraging individuals with intellectual disabilities to participate actively in their communities. Through its provincial programmes, competitions, partnerships and development initiatives, Special Olympics Ontario contributes to inclusive sport and community participation throughout Ontario.
