    About Us

Sparta Rotterdam is a professional football club based in Rotterdam, South Holland, Netherlands, and is recognised as the oldest professional football club in the Netherlands. The club was established on 1 April 1888 when a group of young Rotterdam residents founded Sparta initially as a cricket club. Football soon became part of the organisation after the members received a football in July of the same year, eventually making football the club’s principal sporting activity. Sparta has developed a distinctive identity closely associated with Rotterdam, its red-and-white colours, the historic Sparta Marsch and its iconic home ground, Het Kasteel. The stadium has been the club’s home since 1916 and remains one of the most recognisable football venues in Dutch football. Sparta Rotterdam competes in the Eredivisie, the highest level of professional football in the Netherlands. Alongside its senior men's team, the organisation operates Jong Sparta, women's football and an extensive youth academy. The youth development programme includes teams across multiple age groups and is an important part of the club’s sporting structure, with a focus on developing players for professional football. Sparta also has a substantial community and social role through Stichting De Betrokken Spartaan, which works on initiatives aimed at improving opportunities and participation for young people and communities in Rotterdam. Commercially, the club maintains an extensive Business Club involving hundreds of companies and partners, supporting sponsorship, networking and business activities around the club. Sparta describes its identity through the principle “Rood-Wit Verbindt,” reflecting its emphasis on connection between the club, supporters, players, employees, businesses and the wider community. The organisation combines professional football, talent development, women's football, community programmes, commercial partnerships and stadium-based activities. With more than a century of history, Sparta Rotterdam continues to maintain a strong local identity while operating as a modern professional football organisation within Dutch football.
