About Us

sc Heerenveen is a professional football club based in Heerenveen, Friesland, Netherlands. The club’s organised football history begins on 20 July 1920, when it was founded under the name Athleta. After several name changes during its early years, the club became known as vv Heerenveen in 1922 and subsequently developed into the professional football organisation known today as sc Heerenveen. The club has a strong regional identity and represents the province of Friesland at the highest level of Dutch football. sc Heerenveen plays its home matches at the Abe Lenstra Stadion, named after the legendary Frisian footballer Abe Lenstra, one of the most important figures in the club’s history. The stadium is located on Abe Lenstra Boulevard in Heerenveen and serves as the central venue for the club’s professional and commercial activities. The club competes in the Eredivisie and operates both men's and women's football programmes. Its football structure also includes an academy dedicated to identifying and developing young players. The Akademy provides a pathway for talented footballers through different age groups and includes opportunities for young players to develop within a professional football environment. sc Heerenveen also operates football schools and development programmes in the wider region, providing additional training opportunities for young players between approximately seven and fourteen years of age. Beyond competitive football, the organisation has an important community role in Friesland. Its social programmes involve young people, schools, local communities, supporters and regional organisations, reflecting the club’s broader connection with its surrounding area. The club also maintains a substantial business network, working with sponsors and commercial partners across Northern Netherlands. Its identity is closely connected to Frisian culture, regional pride and its distinctive blue-and-white colours. Today, sc Heerenveen combines professional football, women's football, youth development, community initiatives, commercial partnerships and supporter engagement within one organisation. With more than a century of history, the club continues to operate as one of the established professional football organisations in the Netherlands.
