Safe Sport International (SSI) is an independent, UK-based charitable organisation dedicated to making sport safer, more inclusive and more accountable for everyone, everywhere. Founded in 2014, it emerged from the work of researchers, athlete advocates and safeguarding practitioners who recognised the need for stronger systems to prevent interpersonal violence, harassment, abuse and exploitation in sporting environments. Its vision is that every person, regardless of age, gender, ability or background, should be able to participate in sport, physical activity and play in an environment built on safety, dignity, respect and fairness. SSI brings together athletes, survivors, researchers, policymakers, sports administrators, safeguarding professionals and advocates to advance evidence-based improvements in sports governance and practice. Its work includes developing international safe sport principles and safeguarding frameworks, providing consultancy and educational resources, supporting professional networks, and organising international conferences that encourage collaboration and the exchange of knowledge. The organisation seeks to help sports clubs, federations, governing bodies, governments and other stakeholders translate safeguarding commitments into practical policies, procedures and everyday behaviour. Its activities address the prevention of harm, appropriate responses to safeguarding concerns, accountability, athlete participation in decision-making and the development of cultures in which people can raise concerns safely. SSI also offers online courses and resources for coaches, parents, club managers, safeguarding leads and other sports professionals. Through its Safe Sport Connect network, it supports knowledge-sharing and cooperation among people working to improve safety in sport. The organisation promotes the principle that safeguarding is a shared responsibility, while recognising that leaders and organisations have particular duties to protect participants and establish effective systems. Its approach combines research, professional expertise and the lived experiences of athletes and survivors. By encouraging consistent standards, education, collaboration and institutional accountability, Safe Sport International works towards a sporting environment in which participation is positive, respectful and free from abuse.
