Fortuna Sittard is a professional football club based in Sittard, Limburg, Netherlands, and competes in the country's highest professional division, the Eredivisie. The club's modern identity dates to 1968, when Fortuna ’54 from Geleen and RKSV Sittardia from Sittard merged following financial and sporting difficulties. The merged organisation initially operated as Fortuna Sittardia Combinatie (FSC), before adopting the name Fortuna Sittard in 1979. Both the club's official historical account and the Eredivisie identify 1968 as the founding year of Fortuna Sittard.  The club is regarded as one of the pioneers of Dutch professional football because one of its predecessors, Fortuna ’54, was founded in 1954 by Gied Joosten and became one of the earliest professional football clubs in the Netherlands. Fortuna ’54 won the KNVB Cup twice, in 1957 and 1964, and finished second in the Dutch top flight in the 1956/57 season. After the 1968 merger, Fortuna Sittard eventually returned to the Eredivisie in 1982.  Fortuna Sittard has experienced several significant periods in its history. During the 1980s, the club established itself in the Eredivisie and reached the KNVB Cup final in 1984/85. The club subsequently qualified for European competition through its cup-final appearance and faced FC København, Wisła Kraków and Everton in the European Cup Winners’ Cup. The 1990s also produced notable players from the club's youth system, including Mark van Bommel, Fernando Ricksen and Kevin Hofland.  After a difficult period involving relegation and serious financial problems, Fortuna Sittard underwent a major transformation. Isitan Gün became the club's majority shareholder in 2016, and in 2018 Fortuna secured promotion back to the Eredivisie after a 16-year absence. The club has remained in the top division since that promotion, establishing itself as a regular Eredivisie participant. The official club history describes the arrival of Principion Holding in 2021 and the subsequent development of Fortuna Vrouwen, which competes in the women's Eredivisie.  Fortuna Sittard plays its home matches at the Fortuna Sittard Stadion, which has been the club's home since November 1999 and currently accommodates more than 12,000 supporters. The stadium is located in the Bedrijvenstad Fortuna area of Sittard, while the club's official address is Milaanstraat 120, 6135 LH Sittard.  Beyond its professional first team, Fortuna Sittard maintains youth-development and community activities. The club's stated social objectives include connecting people in the region, promoting healthy lifestyles and providing opportunities for vulnerable groups. Its Football Memories programme, for example, uses football history and shared memories to encourage social interaction among older people.  Fortuna Sittard therefore combines a long professional football heritage with a strong regional identity, youth-development tradition and community role in Limburg.
