The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) is the governing body for association football in the Republic of Ireland. Established in 1921, the organisation is responsible for the administration, promotion, and development of football at every level across the country, from grassroots participation to elite international competition. Headquartered at the FAI National Football Centre in Abbotstown, Dublin, the association oversees men's, women's, youth, futsal, and amateur football while working closely with clubs, leagues, schools, local authorities, and regional football associations. The FAI organises major domestic competitions including the League of Ireland, FAI Cup, Women's Premier Division, Presidents Cup, and numerous youth and amateur tournaments. It also manages the Republic of Ireland men's, women's, and age-group national teams, representing the country in UEFA and FIFA competitions. As a full member of both FIFA and UEFA, the association is responsible for implementing international football regulations, coaching standards, referee education, safeguarding, and governance across Irish football. Through extensive grassroots initiatives, coach education programmes, player development pathways, disability football, school programmes, and community engagement projects, the FAI aims to increase participation and improve football opportunities throughout Ireland. The association also operates the Football Pathways Plan, supports elite player development through regional academies, and works to enhance facilities and infrastructure nationwide. Following significant governance reforms in recent years, the FAI has strengthened its organisational structure, financial oversight, and strategic planning while focusing on sustainable growth and long-term development of the sport. Its vision is to inspire and unite communities through football by creating opportunities for participation, improving standards at every level, and achieving success internationally while ensuring the game remains inclusive, accessible, and professionally managed throughout the Republic of Ireland.
