Darlington Football Club, commonly known as Darlington FC or “Darlo,” is an English football club based in Darlington, County Durham, in the North East of England. Founded in July 1883, the club has a long history in English football and is widely recognised by its traditional nickname, “The Quakers.” Its identity is closely connected with the town of Darlington and its surrounding community. The club plays its home matches at Blackwell Meadows, a shared sporting venue that it returned to after a period of playing outside the town. Darlington competes in the National League North, within the English non-league football pyramid. Throughout its history, the club has participated in the English Football League and various regional and national competitions. Its honours include winning the Fourth Division championship in 1990–91 and the Football Conference title in 1989–90. The club has also achieved memorable runs in domestic cup competitions, including appearances in the FA Cup and FA Trophy. Darlington has experienced significant financial and organisational challenges, including entering administration and undergoing restructuring. In 2012, the club's current operating company, Darlington 1883 Limited, was established, and the organisation moved towards a supporter-owned model. The Darlington FC Supporters Group became the majority shareholder, giving supporters a substantial role in the club's ownership and long-term direction. This community-based structure is a defining part of its modern identity. The club operates a senior men's team alongside youth development activities and community football initiatives. Through its academy and development programmes, Darlington provides opportunities for young players to improve technical ability, tactical understanding, teamwork and discipline. The club also works with the Darlington Football Club Foundation, which delivers community-focused programmes and uses sport to encourage inclusion, health, education and personal development. Its wider operations include coaching, recruitment, performance analysis, administration, media and communications, commercial partnerships, hospitality, ticketing and supporter engagement. Darlington collaborates with local businesses, schools, sponsors, volunteers and community organisations to sustain its activities and strengthen its connection with the town. Its supporters play an important role in fundraising, governance and matchday operations. With a history spanning more than a century, Darlington FC continues to combine competitive football with community ownership and local engagement, aiming to develop its sporting structure while preserving its distinctive place in the football culture of County Durham.
