About Us

Gil Vicente Futebol Clube is a Portuguese professional football club based in Barcelos, in the Braga District of northern Portugal. The club was founded on 3 May 1924 as Gil Vicente Foot-Ball Club, taking its name from the Gil Vicente theatre in the centre of Barcelos, where a group of local friends regularly played football. Over the course of more than a century, the club has developed from a regional football organisation into an established participant in Portuguese professional football. Gil Vicente currently competes in Portugal's Primeira Liga, the country's top division. The club has won five major domestic titles in its history, including two second-tier championships and three AF Braga first-division titles. Its most notable modern achievement came in the 2010–11 season, when Gil Vicente won the Liga Orangina and secured promotion to the Primeira Liga. In 2012, the club reached the final of the Taça da Liga, where it faced Benfica. The club achieved another important milestone in 2022 by finishing fifth in the Primeira Liga and qualifying for European competition for the first time. Gil Vicente subsequently participated in the UEFA Europa Conference League during the 2022–23 season. The achievement represented a significant moment in the club's history and reinforced its position among Portugal's established professional football organisations. Player development is an important part of Gil Vicente's sporting structure. The club operates approximately 20 youth teams and has received formal recognition from the Portuguese Football Federation for its player-development work. In 2021, the FPF certified Gil Vicente as a four-star training organisation after assessing areas including sporting development, recruitment, organisational structure, medical support, human resources and facilities. The club plays its home matches at Estádio Cidade de Barcelos, located in Lugar do Faial, S. João de Vila Boa. The stadium also serves as the club's main administrative base. Gil Vicente maintains dedicated departments covering professional football, women's football, youth development, marketing, communications, finance, membership and public relations. Gil Vicente's LinkedIn profile identifies the organisation as a spectator-sports entity headquartered in Barcelos, with a reported company size of 201–500 employees. The club's official website confirms Barcelos as its home city and describes the organisation as a longstanding part of the city's sporting identity.
