The Amateur Football Alliance (AFA), commonly known as the Amateur FA, is an affiliated County Football Association within the English football structure. It is unusual among England’s County FAs because it does not serve a specific geographical area. Instead, it brings together affiliated amateur football leagues and clubs that share a commitment to amateur football, competitive participation, fair play and respect for opponents and match officials. The Football Association lists the Amateur Football Alliance among England’s County Football Associations and confirms its headquarters at Unit 3, 7 Wenlock Road, London, N1 7SL. The organisation traces its origins to 1906, when the Amateur Football Defence Council was formed in response to the growing professionalisation of English football. It was reorganised as the Amateur Football Association in 1907 and later adopted the name Amateur Football Alliance in 1934. Its original purpose was to preserve the traditions and values of amateur football at a time when professional football was becoming increasingly dominant. Today, the AFA supports affiliated leagues and clubs across London, the Home Counties and elsewhere in England. Its activities include competition administration, club and league support, safeguarding, referee development, coach development and opportunities for participation. The organisation promotes an ethos centred on “fun, fair-play and friendship” and aims to provide football opportunities for people of different ages, genders, abilities and backgrounds. The AFA's affiliated competitions include the Southern Amateur Football League and the Arthurian League, among others. Its flagship knockout competition is the AFA Senior Cup, contested by affiliated clubs. The organisation's historic membership has included clubs that subsequently became prominent within English football, while its current network continues to preserve traditional amateur football alongside modern grassroots development. The AFA operates as a nonprofit organisation and has a small professional workforce. Its LinkedIn profile lists 2–10 employees, headquarters in London and its foundation year as 1907. Companies House separately records The Amateur Football Alliance Limited as an active private company limited by guarantee without share capital, incorporated in 2000 and operating in the sports-activities sector. Through its competitions, governance, development work and support for affiliated clubs and leagues, the Amateur Football Alliance continues to play a distinctive role in preserving and developing amateur football within England.
