Jobs4Football meets Jesse Devers
I had the pleasure to speak with Irish forward Jesse Devers, who has recently signed with Icelandic side, Magni Grenivik. Jesse made the move to Iceland in July and has started to adjust not only the temperature difference. “I’ve been here two weeks now and I am starting to settle in well at the club. I’ve played two games but I need to get my fitness levels back to where they were. I’ve still got to get used to the food, the language and driving on the other side of the road but the club and the people of the town have welcomed me brilliantly. I had a full week of training with the squad and it’s going well, the drills are mostly same as before too.” Jesse has played 60 minutes for the side so far as he regains fitness, and has scored 2 goals,
Before the move to Iceland, Jesse has played in Ireland since signing for Galway United from Wolves in 2016. Devers came into his form at Finn Harps and Sligo Rovers having proven his striking prowess in his highlight reel, especially the flick and volley in the box while playing for Sligo in the cup, as well as a volley from outside the box reminiscent of Jamie Vardy’s against Liverpool in 2016. Jesse had an excellent education with catergory one academy Wolves however, feels like he has improved on his game from his time in Ireland, and has learnt from playing for Ireland internationally for the U14 – U18s. “I was doing silly things on the pitch when I was younger like trying to master certain skills or have some flair throughout my gameplay, which usually ended up in me losing the ball, doing the basics well is what any player should focus on first and foremost. It is great to experience football in another country also, I feel that will add more to my game and would advise any other players thinking of making the move abroad to do it as it can benefit you as a person both on and off the pitch”
Jesse discovered Jobs4Football through social media and he sent a message in reference to a player request post, which was received and helped plant the foundation for the next pathway of his football journey. “Jobs4Football have been great, Nick has been helping me along my journey by telling me what to expect on and off the pitch in Iceland and the deal with Magni came through and was finalised in the space of two weeks. The opportunity has certainly given a new dimension to my CV and I hope to score goals which will lead me onto my next step ” Jesse is prolific in front of goal and wants to prove that no matter where the pitch is or who the club is he is always going to give 100%. The Irish forward has 9 games to prove himself, and with Magni at the bottom of the league he has the opportunity to save the team from relegation into the 3rd tier of Icelandic football. “Hopefully, I keep scoring goals and that helps the club stay in this League”
Jesse hopes the rest of his season at Magni Grenivik is filled with goals and believes that with the support and guidance from Jobs4Football, his professional football career can reach new heights. Jesse is preparing this week to take on fellow strugglers Fjallabyggd this on Wednesday and hopes to secure crucial points for his side to climb out of the drop zone.
