Coach – Football Women’s 2nd team 

Responsible To 

Union of Students, University of Derby  

Hours 

1.5 hours per week for up to 22 weeks during the academic year (September 2026 – March 2027)

Salary 

£20 per hour. 

A separate funding allocation will be available for official British Universities and Colleges Sport fixture support. Fixtures are typically played on Wednesday afternoons during the academic year (October – March)

Contract Term 

This is a fixed-term engagement for the period stated above. There is no guarantee of continued employment, renewal, or further coaching engagement beyond the expiry of this agreement. 

 

General Purpose of the Role 

To organise, deliver, and oversee coaching for the University of Derby Football Women’s 2nd team, supporting the development, performance, participation, and wellbeing of student athletes, with the aim of improving individual and team performances within BUCS and other competitive or recreational activities. 

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities 

  1. To act as the primary coaching contact for the Union in relation to the operational and sporting development of the 2nd team, working collaboratively with elected student committee members.  
  2. To plan, organise, and deliver safe, inclusive, and effective training sessions that support both team and individual development.  
  3. To support player development through appropriate coaching, performance feedback, and mentoring.  
  4. To lead on team selection, tactics, and match preparation in consultation with club captains/committee members and in accordance with the club’s selection policy.  
  5. To attend agreed fixtures and competitions (home and away) to provide coaching, tactical guidance, team management, and player support.  
  6. To promote a positive, inclusive, respectful, and enjoyable club culture in line with the values and ethos of Team Derby.  
  7. To support the ongoing development and sustainability of the club, including recruitment, retention, progression, and performance objectives.  
  8. To maintain effective communication with the Union, club committee, facility staff, and relevant National Governing Bodies (NGBs) where appropriate.  
  9. To ensure all activities are delivered in accordance with relevant health and safety requirements, risk assessments, safeguarding procedures, and University facility regulations.  

 

 

  1. To act in accordance with:  
  • the Club Coaches Code of Practice;  
  • Union and University policies and procedures;  
  • relevant NGB rules, regulations, and codes of conduct.  
  1. To uphold the principles of equality, diversity, and inclusion, ensuring all members are treated fairly and respectfully.  
  2. To maintain appropriate professional boundaries with students and use approved communication channels only.  
  3. To report any safeguarding, welfare, disciplinary, health and safety, or conduct concerns promptly to the Union.  
  4. To attend relevant coach meetings, development opportunities, and review meetings as reasonably required by the Union.  
  5. To maintain appropriate coaching qualifications, memberships, certifications, and DBS clearance (where applicable) throughout the duration of the engagement.  
  6. To maintain attendance records and submit invoices and supporting documentation in accordance with Union procedures.  
  7. To undertake any other duties reasonably associated with the role, as directed by the Union.  

 

Experience Required 

  • Minimum Level 2 NGB Coaching Qualification (or equivalent).  
  • Previous relevant coaching experience within a club, educational, or performance environment. (Desirable) 
  • Sound technical and tactical knowledge of the sport.  
  • Experience working with young adults and/or student athletes (Desirable) 
  • Experience in planning and delivering structured coaching sessions.

Additional Information 

  • Coaches are expected to maintain professional standards of conduct at all times when representing the club, Union, or University.  
  • This role does not constitute permanent employment with the Union or the University.  
  • Appointment to the role may be subject to satisfactory references, qualifications, right to work checks, and DBS clearance where required. 
  • Applicants must have the legal right to work in the UK for the duration of the engagement. Unfortunately, the Union of Students are unable to provide sponsorship or support for visa applications for this role.
