Born on 19 October 1983 in Preston, the 6'4" goalkeeper established himself as a formidable presence between the posts, making over 200 appearances for Preston North End and earning recognition as the club's Player of the Year in both the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons.

Throughout his extensive career spanning over two decades, Lonergan accumulated more than 400 professional appearances across numerous clubs. His journey included significant spells at Leeds United (2011-2012, 2017-2018), Bolton Wanderers (2012-2015), Fulham (2015-2016), Wolverhampton Wanderers (2016-2017), Middlesbrough (2018-2019), and later Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion, and Everton.

Notably, Lonergan enjoyed a memorable period with Liverpool's men's team during the 2019-20 season, where he was part of the squad that won the Premier League title and collected medals in both the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.

The veteran goalkeeper continued his career with Everton from 2021 to 2024, spending three years gaining further top-flight experience. His final playing role was with Wigan Athletic in 2024, where he took on a player-coach position, marking the beginning of his transition into coaching.
