About the Role
This is a key role within the Academy’s physical performance department, which requires a collaborative, committed and pro-active practitioner. The role will include but not limited to leading on physical profiling, gym programming, and daily prep programming to transfer the development of physical capacities and qualities to in game physical performance. You will work very closely with the interdisciplinary Performance Support team, including nutrition, medical and technical staff to optimise long term athletic development, player availability and player education. This position sits alongside another PDP Physical Performance Coach to deliver a programme that develops robust, athletic, and adaptable athletes and prepares them for the chaotic and demanding nature of professional football.
Your Skills and Experience + Personal traits
The successful candidate will have industry recognised qualifications in a combination of sports science and strength and conditioning along with a higher-level degree in strength & conditioning or sports science. Additionally, the successful candidate will have 5 or more years’ experience in an elite high-performance sport environment delivering regularly to elite athletes.
We are looking for someone who has a passion for athletic player development, with a strong belief in working as a collective team, and a desire to bring people together in a collaborative manner. This person will have an interest in using objective data to inform interventions and a thirst to explore the “grey areas” of coaching to help facilitate the training transfer of training from off the pitch to on the pitch.

At Chelsea Academy we want to deliver Performance Sciences and Physical Development differently. The ambition is to continue evolving, putting in a structure and bring in people that will give the academy and club, as a whole, the best chance of future sustainable success. The Academy Performance Support team has recently gone through a restructure and seen substantial growth, to be the best player development academy in the world. The role of PDP Physical Performance Coach is a key operational appointment in this evolution, responsible for establishing a best in class physical development programme for the Academy’s U21 and U18 teams.
They will require an expert understanding around the breath of performance support, have reference of best practice in sport, to help players become “athletic, robust and adaptable athletes, who are prepared for the demands of the adult game”.
Whilst performance outcomes are important within the PDP, the academy’s purpose is to “Produce the next generation of the Premier Leagues best players, supported by a world leading development programme”. With this in mind, a passion for long term athletic development is critical.
