Wigan Athletic – First Team Analyst

Role Purpose:

Liaise with the Men’s First Team Head Coach and Coaching Staff to assess the performance of the forthcoming opposition in all competitions. Assist with detailed pre- and post-match analysis for direct use by the First Team Head Coach and coaching staff. They will also be responsible for live match day analysis support and collaborating with all other staff to continually enhance the standards of performance analysis provision throughout the Football Club.

Key Tasks and responsibilities:

  • Provide an in depth set play and goals analysis on the forthcoming opposition both statistical and video based which meets the needs of the coaching staff.
  • Theoretical / evidence-based analysis to assist with the coaching process and philosophy.
  • Implement custom-build statistical reports on the forthcoming opposition.
  • Travel with the first team both home and away (staying over where necessary).
  • Assist match day analysis; technical and tactical.
  • Contribute to longitudinal analysis and statistical reports throughout the season.
  • Carry out bespoke projects to enhance preparation for the coaching and playing staff.
  • Contributing to driving standards of practice within the performance analysis department, and throughout the Club.
  • To contribute to ongoing research that supports the continuous strive towards implementing best practice performance analysis methodologies.

What are we looking for:

  • Maths and English GSCE Grade A-C or equivalent.
  • Hold a full UK Driving Licence with the ability to travel.
  • Elite level experience of providing performance analysis support within a professional football club.
  • Production of set play and goals analysis databases. Analysing the fine detail to enhance teams’ preparations.
  • Experience of live match analysis.
  • Experience with a variety of video capture coding, telestration and presentation software (particularly Hudl SportsCode, iCoda, Final Cut Pro, Keynote).
  • Filming wide angle to comply with exchange rules.
  • A sound understanding of the technical and tactical aspects of football and the ability to dissect the strengths and weaknesses of an opposition or individual player.
  • An excellent understanding of performance analysis software, (Hudl SportsCode) editing and analysis techniques, and other associated 3rd party products (Microsoft Office, Keynote, Final Cut Pro, Wyscout, Instat, Scout7 isf).
  • Attention to detail and the ability to communicate using a variety of presentation skills, including creation of video presentations and specified documentation etc.
  • Excellent data visualisation skills to present complex data clearly and concisely.
  • Professional manner and the drive to always produce excellence.
  • Ability to work to strict deadlines along with a reactive approach to the continually evolving nature of professional football.
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills.
  • Self-motivated with a proactive approach to the management of their work.
  • Hard-working and the commitment to work unsociable hours.
  • The ability to thrive and not lose accuracy under pressure.
