Role: BSc Sport Performance and Analysis Placement

Location: Academy of Light

Employment Type: 12 Month Internship

About Us:

Sunderland AFC is more than just a football club; we are a proud community institution that embodies the

spirit of our city.

At the heart of our club is “The Relentless Obsession”—an unwavering passion which fuels our pursuit of

success, inspires our players, and ignites the spirit of our supporters. We embrace every challenge with

determination, striving to play the beautiful game with flair and tenacity.

At SAFC, we believe in the power of football to unite and inspire. Our commitment extends beyond the pitch

as we strive to make a positive impact through various community initiatives, empowering individuals and

celebrating diversity.

Join us on our journey as we continue to build on our legacy, fuelled by “The Relentless Obsession” for

greatness.

About the Team:

The Analysis and Data team is dedicated to transforming numbers into insights, enabling players and

coaches to excel in every aspect of the game.

We employ cutting-edge analytics tools to assess player performance, team dynamics, and opponent

strategies.

Collaboration with the Coaching and Player Recruitment Teams is vital to our success. We work hand-in

hand to identify key performance indicators that align with our club's objectives, ensuring that our analyses

contribute directly to training regimens and recruitment strategies.

The Opportunity:

Sunderland Association Football Club have Performance Analysis placements available for the 2025/26

football season. Reporting to the Analysis and Insights domain, the placements will run alongside a Sport

Performance and Analysis MSc course or equivalent. Successful applicants will be considered for roles

supporting the Academy, First Team, Women’s and Coaching programmes. This is a great opportunity to

learn and develop performance analysis skills within a fast-paced and demanding elite sporting

environment.

In this placement, you'll deliver captivating content that resonates with our audiences, engage in live pre

and post-match analyses, and capture the essence of training and matches—both home and away—while

fully embracing our club’s coaching philosophy. Your contributions will not only support ongoing projects

but also help maintain comprehensive video databases for teams and players. Additionally, you’ll assist in

crafting tailored analysis sessions for individuals and units, all while collaborating on innovative strategies

aimed at elevating player development.

What We Ask For:

To thrive in this exciting role, we’re looking for motivated candidates who are currently pursuing an

undergraduate degree and can commit to the entire 2025/26 season.

While it’s essential to have a strong academic background, we also value relevant qualifications in football

coaching, scouting, performance analysis, or talent identification. Familiarity with performance analysis

tools such as Hudl, SBG, or Wyscout will give you an edge, as will a solid understanding of the game’s

technical and tactical aspects. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and the ability to operate on Mac systems—

particularly with software like iMovie—are also important for success in this role.

We seek individuals who are bold, ambitious, and have a positive attitude towards learning. Embracing

challenges creatively and finding innovative solutions is crucial, as is being industrious and willing to

commit to irregular hours, including weekends and evenings. A genuine passion for developing a future

career in performance and data analysis will set you apart. Moreover, you’ll need to uphold our club’s

standards and values, contributing to an elite environment that fosters player development while

complying with all club policies and procedures.

An Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check will need to be completed before you join our

team, and a valid UK driving license is essential for travel to matches and training sessions.

Why Join Us at SAFC:

At Sunderland AFC, you’re not just becoming part of a football club; you’re entering a vibrant community

fuelled by passion and pride. Our commitment to making a difference means you’ll engage with local

initiatives that truly matter, allowing you to leave a positive impact right here at home.

You’ll thrive in an exciting, dynamic atmosphere where every day is a new adventure filled with the thrill of

football and teamwork. We believe in nurturing talent, so you’ll have access to training programs and

mentorship opportunities.

Our diverse and inclusive culture celebrates individuality, ensuring that every voice is heard and valued.

You’ll be part of a team that unites in the spirit of collaboration and respect, making your work environment

both rewarding and inspiring.
