Colum Curtis Becomes Head Coach of Vishaka FC

Colum Curtis, became the youngest head coach in full-time employment, managing a C-League club, Visakha FC, in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh, 7,000 miles away from his hometown of West Belfast.

At only 30 years old, Curtis’s journey to becoming a head coach in Cambodia has been swift, but he is relishing the opportunity to learn, progress, and make his mark in Asian football.

Curtis’s coaching career began in 2015 when he ventured to China and worked as an assistant director and then director of coaching for a grassroots club in Beijing. With 16 staff under his guidance, Curtis gained valuable experience in a foreign football environment, honing his skills and building a reputation as a talented coach.

Visakha FC is considered one of the ‘Big Five’ clubs in Cambodia, alongside Svay Rieng, Phnom Penh Crown, Boeung Ket, and Nagaworld. As the runners-up of the previous season, the club was seeking a change in structure and playing style, and Curtis was tasked with leading the transformation.

Reflecting on his experience so far, Curtis said, “It’s been a fantastic journey. It’s a bit of a sink or swim scenario, but I’m confident in my own ability, and I’ve had a lot of support from people back home. I’ve always been open-minded, and I view it as a great opportunity to continue learning and hopefully progress as a coach and manager.”

Managing a club in a foreign country comes with its challenges, including adapting to a different culture, language, and playing style. However, Curtis’s passion for football and his determination to succeed have helped him overcome these hurdles.
