What are the key attributes to become a captain in a football team?

Being a captain of a football team is a great honour and responsibility. A captain is the leader of the team, both on and off the field, and is expected to set an example for his teammates to follow. In order to be a successful, there are a number of key attributes that are essential.

First and foremost, a captain must be a strong leader. They must have the ability to inspire and motivate his teammates, and to lead by example. This means that they must be dedicated to the team and willing to put in the extra effort to make sure that the team is successful. A captain must also be able to communicate effectively with his teammates, coaches, and officials whilst also  conveying the team’s goals and strategies, and to make sure that everyone is on the same page.

Secondly, a captain must be a good role model. They must be someone that his teammates can look up to and respect which means they must be a good person, both on and off the field. A captain must also be a good sportsman, and must always conduct themselves in a manner that is consistent with the team’s values.

Thirdly, being a good decision maker is a must. They must be able to think quickly and make the right decisions, both on and off the field for the benefit of the team holistically. Leaders must also be able to make tough decisions when necessary, even if it means going against the wishes of his teammates.

Finally, a captain must be physically and mentally prepared. They must be in top physical shape and must be able to perform when it matters most.  It is imperative to be mentally tough and able to handle the pressure of the big occasions

There have been many famous football captains throughout history, but some of the most notable include:

  1. Lionel Messi: He has been the captain of the Argentina national team since 2011 and recently won the Word Cup. He also has captained Barcelona FC. Possibly the greatest player to ever play the game, he set standards on the pitch for others to follow. He gains respect from his peers instantly due to his high performance levels week in, week out
  2. Cristiano Ronaldo: He has been the captain of the Portugal national team since 2008 and has captained Real Madrid, Juventus and Manchester United. He is considered one of the greatest players of all time and has won numerous individual awards and accolades.
  3. Steven Gerrard: He captained Liverpool FC for 12 years and the England national team for 6 years. He is considered one of the greatest midfielders of a generation and often drove his Liverpool side forward often leading by example with key tackles and goals.
  4. Iker Casillas: He captained Real Madrid for over a decade and the Spanish national team for over a decade. Vocally he dictated what was needed from his teammates and had sucess in doing so.
  5. Roy Keane: He captained a successful Manchester United team and was a mainstay for Ireland national team. Keane is considered one of the toughest tacklers in the game but he matched that with his mental toughness and
  6. Carles Puyol: He captained Barcelona FC for over a decade. He is considered one of the greatest defenders of all time and is known for his leadership on and off the field.
