UEFA Youth League: Manchester Utd and Chelsea come from behind to win

Both Manchester United and Chelsea’s U19 sides came from behind to win in the UEFA Youth League on Wednesday.

Liverpool and Man City were in action on Tuesday, read how they got on here:

UEFA Youth League: Liverpool beaten in Madrid and Man City held in Bruges

Manchester United U19 4-2 Atalanta U19 (Group F)

Man United found themselves a goal down on 20 minutes after Simeone Panada’s first goal of the season but responded brilliantly to lead 3-1 just ten minutes later.

Zidane Iqbal equalised with a long range effort and Joe Hugill put United in front, his fifth goal in all competitions so far this season. Alejandro Garnacho made it 3-1 minutes after setting up Hugill.

Omari Forson made it 4-1 in the second half, all but confirming the three points. Atalanta grabbed a late consolation through Tommaso De Nipoti.

In the other game in Group F, Villarreal beat Young Boys 3-1 in Bern. The Spaniards are the only team with a 100% record after three group stage games.

Jorge Pascual put Villarreal in front with his third UEFA Youth League goal of the season. Aurele Amenda equalised on the stroke of half time, Young Boys’ first goal of the competition.

Villerreal just had too much for the Swiss side in the second half, Marlone Jacquemin and Sergio Hinojosa got the second half goals to seal a 3-1 win.

Chelsea U19 4-2 Malmo U19 (Group H)

The Swedish side started very brightly at Kingsmeadow and took a deserved early lead when Isak Bjerkebo converted Pontus Stromberg’s cross on six minutes.

Malmo were by far the better side in the first half, Harvey Vale‘s effort from 25 yards was the best that the hosts could muster in the first 45 minutes.

The visitors started the second half brightly too, Bjerkebo should’ve doubled Malmo’s lead less than two minutes after the restart but he shot wide when one-on-one with Teddy Sharman-Lowe

Bjerkebo did make his next chance count, firing home from close range to make it 2-0 on 58 minutes after Chelsea failed to deal with another Stromberg cross.

Chelsea needed a quick reply to give themselves any chance in the game and they managed to get exactly that. Dion Rankine with a rare goal, a moment of magic that sparked life into the Blues and hauled them back into the game when they seemed beaten.

Rankine created half a yard of space in the box and curled home with his left foot, his first goal of the season coming right when Chelsea needed it the most.

Andy Myers brought on Swedish winger Edwin Andersson and he made two assists within fifteen minutes of being on the pitch. First, he took a short corner to Xavier Simons whose cross caught the wind at Kingsmeadow and caught out goalkeeper Melker Ellborg, the ball sailing into the top corner to put Chelsea on level terms.

Another Andersson corner led to Chelsea taking the lead, the Swedish goalkeeper again didn’t cover himself in glory, nor did the defence who allowed Bryan Fiabema a free header from less than six yards out.

The Norwegian striker was never going to miss, especially given the form he is in at the minute, that was his sixth goal in his last five games for club and country.

Silko Thomas rounded off the scoring for Chelsea to seal a brilliant comeback win. The 17-year-old picked up the ball on the left touchline, drove into the box and finished into the near post for his first goal of the season.

The two meet for the reverse fixture in Sweden in two weeks time, we hope for another game as exciting as this one.

In the other game in Group H, Juventus beat Zenit 2-0 to remain top of the group. The Italians took the lead early on through Gabriele Mulazzi and substitute Nicolo Turco sealed the win in the second half.

Chelsea are second in he group and Malmo are bottom with just one point, despite three impressive performances.

Elsewhere in the UEFA Youth League on Wednesday, Benfica were the standout performers as they hammered Bayern Munich 4-0 at the Caixa Futebol Campus. Pedro Santos, Cher Ndour, Diego Moreira and Joao Neves were the goal scorers. Moreira’s terrific solo effort was the pick of the bunch.

Benfica are second in Group E, behind this season’s surprise package so far, Dinamo Kiev. The Ukrainians drew 0-0 with Barcelona on Wednesday to remain unbeaten. Barca are third in the group and Bayern are bottom without a point.

Finally, in Group G, Sevilla stayed top with a 3-0 win away to Lille. Dario Benavides Fuentes and Diego Fernandez Talaveron put the Spaniards 2-0 up before half time. Lille had both Rolland Baptiste and Rocco Ascone dismissed in the second half before Juanlu made it 3-0 to Sevilla in stoppage time.

Salzburg also ran out 3-0 winners in Group G, against Wolsburg. The Austrians took the lead in the first half through Justin Omoregie. Wolsburg had Irish U19 international Anselmo Garcia sent off in the second half and Salzburg made the man advantage count, Daniel Owusu‘s third of the season and a Matthew Meier own goal sealed a 3-0 win.
