Tottenham youngster recalled from Northampton with step up to League One imminent

Young Tottenham forward Kion Etete has been recalled from his loan at Northampton Town ahead of a move to League One Cheltenham Town.

The 20-year-old has spent the first half of the season with League Two high fliers Northampton Town, scoring six goals in all competitions and helping the Cobblers to 2nd in the table.

His performances have clearly been so good that Spurs feel he needs to move up a division.

The loss of Etete is undoubtedly a blow for Northampton but they will hope Jon Guthrie and Sam Hoskins can continue their recent good form in front of goal to keep up their promotion push.

Guthrie has three in his last four games whilst Hoskins is the club’s top scorer this season with seven.

Cobblers boss Jon Brady expressed what a loss Etete will be but spoke highly of the youngster.

“This news is obviously a blow to us but Kion has developed so well over the last few months with us that Spurs want to see him play at the next level up sooner than originally expected,” Brady said.

“We understand that Spurs received an offer from a Championship club to buy Kion but have no intention of selling, however they feel he now needs to be playing in League One for his continued development.

“For Kion’s part he has expressed to me how happy he was with his spell at Northampton and thanked all the coaching staff for making him a better player.”

As well as thanking Brady in person, Etete posted the following message on his Instagram (@KionEtete).

“Just wanted to say a massive thank you to all the staff, players and fans for the belief and support I received from day 1. I will never forget this part of my journey and all the best for the rest of the season @officiallyntfc.”

Although Etete has missed the last three League Two games due to a hamstring injury, which he is still nursing, he is still expected to join Cheltenham in the coming weeks.

The Robins are currently 15th in League One, seven points above the relegation zone.

Cheltenham have just lost the services of Swansea forward Kyle Joseph, who has returned to the Liberty Stadium after a loan spell that saw him score four times in 19 League One appearances throughout the first half of the season. This sees a space for a striker appear in Michael Duff’s squad which Etete will likely fill.

In other Tottenham news…

Etete’s move to Cheltenham is one of many expected outgoings at Spurs this January.

Another young player that could leave on loan is talented forward J’Neil Bennett. Bennett was out on loan with Crewe last season where he scored once in nine games in League One. He has just returned to training following an injury and will likely depart on loan this month.

Other departures this month could include loan moves for Dele Alli and Joe Rodon. Spurs will also reportedly listen to offers for Steven Bergwijn but Antonio Conte has ruled out a move for Harry Winks.

Elsewhere, Oliver Skipp has emerged as a target for Manchester United as they continue their hunt for a holding midfielder but it is highly unlikely that Spurs will allow one of their high-performing academy graduates to join a Premier League rival.
