Job Description

West Ham United Foundation (WHUF) is seeking a Youth Mentor to work 30hrs/week Monday-Friday at Basildon Lower Academy to deliver our Premier League Inspires programme. Through Premier League Inspires, WHUF aims to provide secondary schools with an engaging curriculum to support their vulnerable, at risk, and struggling pupils.

The Youth Mentor will act as the lead deliverer of Premier League Inspires at Basildon Lower Academy, engaging with pupils in a one-to-one and group setting, supporting them with their personal and academic development.

The successful candidate will have experience working in a secondary school setting and possess an understanding of the challenges young people aged 11-14 experience. They will have a proven commitment to supporting young people in school. They will understand the education sector and have an ability to build positive relationships with disaffected young people.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Education Manager, the Youth Mentor will:

  • Plan, deliver, and review Premier League Inspires sessions in Basildon Lower Academy, delivering both one-to-one and group sessions.

  • Engage with Basildon Lower Academy pupils in a meaningful and impactful way, building positive and trustworthy relationships.

  • Develop and build WHUF’s relationship with Basildon Lower Academy, with the aim of establishing a sustainable delivery model.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Plan and deliver sessions that engage and inspire learners.

  • To create personal development plans for all pupils on the Premier League Inspires programme.

  • Complete all Risk Assessment procedures and protocols using the internal systems.

  • Support the delivery of a high quality, safe and to specification programme for WHUF.

  • To work with the Education Manager to identify areas of growth for the programme.

  • Any other duties as reasonably requested by the line manager / organisation.

Personal Specification

The ideal candidate will have skills and experience in the following areas: -

  • Educated to Degree level in relevant subject and/or Youth Work or Mentoring qualification – L2 or above (D)

  • Understanding of equality, diversity, and inclusion and why this is so important in employment (E)

  • Experience of working within diverse communities (E)

  • Experience of working with young people aged 11-16 in education settings. (E)

  • Safeguarding/Child Protection Training and First Aid (will be provided in post if not already done) (D)

Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to relate to young people from a wide range of backgrounds and engage them in meaningful activities. (E)

  • Ability to plan, deliver, and review inspiring and motivational interventions to be delivered in an education setting (E).

  • To have a good knowledge of the local community (D)

  • An understanding of safeguarding and health and safety in a youth work setting. (E)

  • Experience and knowledge of secondary school settings. (D)

  • Strong commitment to quality service delivery (E)

  • A commitment to supporting young people, and the principles of equality and diversity. (E)
