Groningen sign £17m wonderkid on loan

FC Groningen announced that they have signed the USA international Ricardo Pepi, on loan. This is six months after Liverpool had missed out on the teenager striker for Bundesliga side Augsburg.

The Dutch side announced on their official Twitter account, that they had signed Pepi on loan for this season. This was despite the attacker moving from Holland in January’s transfer window. Augsburg beat Liverpool to sign the forward in a deal valued at a reported £17m.

Liverpool were just one of many sides following Pepi this winter. Manchester United as well as Southampton were also linked with the FC Dallas academy graduates. But, the American wonderkid continues to struggle to adapt since his move to Europe.

Pepi, a 19-year old, has not scored an assist in 16 Augsburg games. But, the loan move from Groningen to the Netherlands could be the right transfer for Pepi.

Any player moving from MLS to Europe will need time to adjust to a different style of football. Brenden Aaronson and Miguel Almiron both experienced similar struggles, so Groningen could be just what they need to get going after their departure from Dallas.

Groningen has seen some of Europe’s most talented strikers over recent years. Luis Suarez, Liverpool icon and FC Barcelona legend, is one example. But, there is good reason to believe that Pepi could just as much success for the Dutch club during the coming months.
